Energy Performance Certificates (EPC)
Section 19(1)(b) of the National Energy Act of 1998 (act no. 34 of 2008) of South Africa requires all public and private buildings with a net floor area of more than 1000 square meters and 2000 square meters respectively to display an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) indicating their energy performance or face penalties. Oelinga is a SANAS accredited EPC inspection body (Accreditation Number: EPC0019) under international standard ISO 17020 and SANS 1544 to issue EPC certificates to building owners.
01
What is an EPC rating?
This is a rating from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient) given to a building indicating its energy efficiency measured in kWh/m2.a. In South Africa this rating will be contained in a certificate to be prominently displayed in an evaluated building.
02
Eligible Buildings
The following buildings according to the regulations and the SANS 10400-XA standard need an EPC:
-
A1 - Entertainment and Public Assembly
-
A2 - Theatrical and Indoor Sport
-
A3 - Places of Instruction
-
G1 - Offices
03
Administration
The EPC regulation is administered by the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI). The evaluation of the building energy performance has to be done by a SANAS accredited inspection body who will submit an EPC report and rating assessment to SANEDI for approval before issuing the certificate.
04
Purpose of EPC
EPC certificates are the first step in improving building energy efficiency and the energy efficiency of the entire building sector. Therefore, they should be seen in the broader framework of building energy management and efficiency improvement.
