Energy performance certificates (EPC) for buildings should be displayed on all private buildings with a net floor area equal or greater than 2000 square meters and public buildings with a net floor area equal or greater than 1000 square meters by December 2022 in South Africa. Otherwise, building owners or their accounts will be liable to incur fines of up to 5 million rand or jail time depending on the severity of the EPC law breach.

However, EPC is not just a regulatory requirement and should not be the end point for building owners. They are part of a broader framework to promote energy efficiency in the energy sector. A good EPC strategy should aim to establish the building energy performance and how to improve it.

A good EPC strategy should aim to establish the building energy performance and how to improve it.

Improving energy efficiency lowers operating costs for the building owners, improves the attractiveness of the building to the tenants and is a step to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from the building sector, a key step in tackling the climate emergency.

Furthermore, the EPC process should provide a moment of reflection for building owners and building managers on how to improve building management. This can include using the latest state of the art technology to manage resource usage and implementing a energy management strategy.

At Oelinga, we are focused on helping facility owners improve their resource management but implementing a coherent strategy that combined IoT instruments and software. Feel free to contact our partner for Energy Efficiency.
